The one-hour ferry ride from Macao to Hong Kong (Kowloon Harbor) was smooth. The custom formalities were much quicker than in Macao. Hong Kong is another right lane driving country. We taxied to our target accommodation and en route we called, using the driver’s cell phone(!), a few other places to gage room availability and price. We knew Hong Kong’s accommodation would be on the expensive side. We ended stopping our choice on a tiny room, but very clean room. The good thing is that we could sleep horizontally instead of vertically. A small walk to the bank made us realize how dense the population is in Hong Kong. We bought ourselves smart cards (Octopuss Card) which we could use for public transportation and most stores in the subway area. We took the subway to visit another large set of computer stores for an Ipad. Up to now, Victoria has made us stop in almost every store where she saw an Ipad on display. On the way back to our room, we walked and stopped at a few jewelery store for Jenny’s pendant. Some stores even offered tea while we were in their store. A few block from our room, we encountered a store offering the lowest price we had seen for an Ipad (real one). To make a short story, we ended leaving the store with an Epad package costing more than our targeted Ipad.
On the second day, we took the subway to Hong Kong Island (the other side of the Victoria harbour) and took the city bus up to Victoria Peak. Skyscrapers are everywhere. On the way up the hill we could admire the houses of rich people. Only BMW and similar are driven by these owners. At the peak we enjoyed the view from the Observation tower. We took the famous Peak Tram (a type of funicular) straight down the hill/mountain. After walking enough in the Central area, we took the ferry across the harbor back to our room. After a great BBQ duck supper, we simply jumped into one of the many two-level buses and went for a ride around town. The Octopuss Cards are really convenient and we have a subway station at our door step.
Our third day, we opted to spend it at Ocean Park, an amusement park, instead of Disneyland which was not getting reviewed in our travel guide. We reached the park with the Subway and bus. We had great full day at this Park. Some rides were made scarier as they are on the edge of a cliff.
After three days of coming and going from accommodation building, I must have been offered on the street, several dozen times, whether I wanted a custom suit and shirts by touts. I can only imagine that they did not like my leisure dress code.
