What does our blog site title “Velocidad” mean?
well. It is kind of a branding thing. For those that know Spanish, you will recognize the word as meaning speed. The word also contains the French word for bicycle- vélo. By extension, we adopted the word Velocidad as meaning:
At the speed of a bicycle
Jenny
Jenny became a very proud owner of a new bicycle in China when she started her career, in 1983, as an English teacher.
Having extensive bicycle experience in China, Jenny was keen to enjoy, in 2003, a one week honeymoon cycling trip in Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, she had never rode a bicycle with panniers along narrow road shoulders. She also never encountered so many motorcycles and dogs running around. Nonetheless, she managed to complete the honeymoon smiling.
Beyond some casual weekend cycling, Jenny’s more enduring cycling experience came with the purchase of a tandem in 2008. Jenny was very happy occupying the rear seat of the tandem while taking very seriously her tandem role as a stoker. Over the next nine years, Jenny enjoyed commuting to work on the tandem with her husband. She would clip her feet into the pedals at the start of the ride and would only un-clip them on arrival at the office some 15kms later. Along the route, Jenny would enjoy singing, looking at the home gardens and whenever required would signal the tandem’s turns.
Gilles
Cycling has been a life long constant for Gilles. He never really stopped cycling after learning to bike at seven years old. Back then he was not sure he would ever be able to loose those dreaded training wheels. In his early adult years, he undertook a number of increasing adventurous bicycle touring trips – from a week to several weeks – in various parts of the country – in the Maritimes, in the Rockies and even up north to James’ Bay.
After each touring adventure, he dreamed of further destinations. In 1989, after only a few years at work, his Federal Government employer, offered a self-funded leave program by which one could differ part of their salary and take an extended leave while cashing in the differed salary. This option allowed him to take a year off work from May 2003 to April 2004. The plan was to cycle from Vancouver to South America. That initial plan came to end in La Paz (Baja) Mexico in July but he managed other shorter cycling trips including one in the Sierra Madre (Mexico) and one from Costa Rica to Guatemala.
Gilles took on another self-funded leave in order to cycle in South America from Bogotá (Colombia) to Santiago (Chile) over a 6 month period from Oct. 2007 to April 2008.
Rich of his touring experience, Gilles was very eager to share his cycling passion with his wife and daughter whom he brought touring in Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Venezuela.
